Spokane County Measure No. 1 on track to fail | Latest Results

Measure 1 asks voters to approve a 0.2% sales tax increase for the purpose of funding a new jail. Here are the latest results.

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — Spokane County's Measure 1, billed as a law and justice proposal, would increase sales tax by .2%. If approved, the county would use its portion to, in part, expand the downtown jail. Geiger Corrections Center would close and inmates would be moved into the new jail building.

Below are the real-time initial election results:

KREM 2 spoke with Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels following the release of initial results. Nowels said he is disappointed the measure is currently failing, but said he recognizes the challenges the county are facing won't go away overnight,

"We're going to have to keep making hard decisions that are not good for public safety," Nowels said. "It's really hard for law enforcement officers and people who care about the safety of our community to take that and understand that that's where we're going to be. And we're going to be there for quite a bit of time, until we figure out a way to get a measure on the ballot that the voters will support."

The Secretary of State will certify the results of the general election on November 28, 2023.
