SPOKANE, Wash. — Betsy Wilkerson and Kim Plese are running for Spokane City Council President.
This is a historical race because this will be the first time Spokane elects a woman for council president.
For current council member Wilkerson, this will be the first election she's ran opposed. She was appointed to council in her first term and ran unopposed in her second. Plese is a former Spokane business owner. She ran for Spokane County Commissioner in 2022 but lost to Chris Jordan.

Betsy Wilkerson sent KREM 2 the following statement after the initial election results were released:
“When we launched this campaign in March, we made a promise: To stay positive, to listen to the community, to share our vision for Spokane, to invite folks to join us, and to never go negative," Wilkerson said in part. "We focused on tackling housing and homelessness and strengthening community safety. On promoting small businesses & helping work families get a leg up. Because I know when seeds are planted in fertile ground, everyone can thrive.”
The Secretary of State will certify the results of the general election on November 28, 2023.
