COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — The Idaho Republican Caucus is set for Saturday, March 2. Republican voters in Idaho will choose the person they want on the November presidential ballot.
The caucus is new to the state in 2024. It is important to note that caucuses are very different than voting in a primary. Instead of casting a vote on a ballot, there will be open meetings to select a candidate.
There will be more than 200 of these meetings taking place across the state on Saturday.
Political Scientist Tony Stewart said the reason Idaho is going back to a caucus format is actually a mistake. The Idaho legislature passed a bill last year that took away the state’s primary election.
Stewart talked about the difference in voter turnout between caucuses and primaries, “You have about a two-hour period in which you can come to the site to sign up, then they close the doors. It is a fraction, a small fraction of the registered voters in the state. Whereas when you have a primary, it is a much larger turnout. It is a huge difference.”
If you want to attend one of the caucuses, you can click here to find your voter precinct.
This weekend is just the Idaho Republican caucus, the Democratic caucus will take place on May 23.
