SPOKANE, Wash. — Initial numbers show that voters in the City of Spokane will pass Spokane Proposition 1.
According to the latest numbers from the Spokane County Elections Office, 58.07% of voters in Spokane County voted "Yes" to the proposition, and 41.93% of voters in Spokane County voted "No" to the proposition.
Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown proposed the "Community Safety Sales Tax" earlier this summer that will be set at one-tenth of a percent.
If passed, Brown said the new tax would cost the average Spokane resident around $1 for every $1,000 they spend. Several necessities such as food and prescription drugs would be exempted.
In the original proposal, the mayor said roughly $6.5 million per year would stay in the City of Spokane and will be dedicated to community safety enhancements.
