Election workers still working hard in Spokane, Kootenai Counties

For Spokane County, the elections auditor says the work continues.

KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — Election Day may be over, but for election workers, there is still plenty of work to be done.

Kootenai County Elections Clerk Jennifer Locke said they finished tabulating Wednesday morning at 6 a.m. Locke said most ballots had two pages, but one precinct had three pages, which made the process that much longer.

The Kootenai County Elections Office said they had a total of 97,711 ballots cast for election day and about 7,200 new registrations on Election Day. They say the office will spend the next 10 days canvasing the election and processing registration cards.

For Spokane County, the elections auditor says the work continues.

“We’ve got roughly 277,000 ballots here on hand," Vicky Dalton, Spokane County Elections Auditor, said. "Some [of which] have been already counted and some are still [to be] processed.”

Dalton said they are waiting on challenged signatures to come back for votes to be counted.

“People who have received a signature challenge letter from us, that says they need to update their signature, they have until the 25th to get that back to us,” Dalton said.

Dalton said the election is not formally over until they certify everything by November 26. She also says there are still a few tight races like county commissioner and the superior court judicial race.

Dalton also said another issue that Spokane County saw was voters who are new to the state threw away their ballots. She claimed there was a lack of understanding on how mail in voting worked, which took some time to resolve.
