What happens after the primary election? Here are the key dates for the general elections in Washington and Idaho

General elections take place in November, but there are several deadlines to be aware of.

WASHINGTON — After the primary election results are certified on August 20, two candidates per race will move onto the next stage of elections.

Regardless of party affiliation, the two candidates who collect the most votes in the primary election will advance to the general election.

In Washington:

The first date to know is October 18: The general election ballots will be mailed out on that day and accessible voting units will be available at voting centers.

October 18 also kicks off the 18-day voting period, with ballots due by November 5.

The next date to know is October 28: Online and mail voter registrations must be received by October 28, which is 8 days before the election.

If voters miss this deadline, they can still register to vote in person on Election Day, but it must be during the Elections Office business hours and before ballots are due at 8 p.m.

The last date to know is November 5, the day of the general election.

Voters must deposit their ballots by 8 p.m. in an official drop box.

Further information can be found on the Spokane County Elections website.

In Idaho:

The first date for Idaho voters to know is October 11: Online voter registration must be completed by October 11.

If voters miss this deadline, they can still register to vote in person on Election Day before the 8 p.m. deadline.

If Idaho voters are not in-state when elections take place and still want to vote, absentee ballots must be requested by October 25.

In order to request an absentee ballot, voters must provide an Idaho Driver's License or Idaho Identification Card and the last four digits of their social security number.

If residents do not have the required materials, a paper application can be submitted by mail to their local County Clerk or residents can visit their county elections office.

Absentee ballots can be requested at the Vote Idaho website.

In-person voting for the Idaho general election takes place on November 5.
