Coeur d'Alene City Council considering new hate crime ordinance

The ordinance would create a separate offense if a person commits a current offense.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — Coeur d'Alene City Council will consider adding a new chapter to the municipal code that would create a separate offense if a person commits a current offense.

City Council said the chapter will create a separate offense "if a person commits a current offense, such as malicious injury to property and disorderly conduct, because of the victim’s actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical or mental disability, or national origin."

"It is imperative that the City of Coeur d’Alene does everything possible to protect the rights of all individuals," Coeur d'Alene Mayor Jim Hammond said.

This move comes after two seemingly racially motivated incidents in downtown Coeur d'Alene this year.

“Hateful behavior will not be tolerated in our community," Coeur d'Alene City Councilmember Amy Evans said.
