SPOKANE, Wash. — Washington State Senate Majority Leader Andy Billig (D-Spokane) announced Monday he won't seek re-election in 2024.

Billig was first elected to the Washington State Legislature in 2010 and became the majority leader in 2019. Billig said he will finish his current term and serve as the majority leader until a new one is selected in November.

“Part of being a good leader is knowing when it is time to step aside and let others lead,” Billig said. “I have been incredibly lucky to have served Spokane in the Legislature and fortunate to have the strong support of my family and so many friends and neighbors throughout our community.”

During his time with the legislature, Billig passed legislation addressing climate change, gun safety, voting rights, affordable housing, reproductive rights and tax reform. He was also part of the McCleary 8, a group of lawmakers who spent more than a year negotiating K-12 funding following the Washington State Supreme Court's McCleary decision.

"For the last 14 years, I have been incredibly lucky to serve you as a member of the Washington State Legislature, first in the House of Representatives and then as your state senator for the past 12, Billig said. "With your support, input, and encouragement, I have tried my hardest to deliver for Spokane and our state. I am proud of the results we have achieved together."

Senate Democrats will elect a new majority leader for the 2025 legislative session in November.
