LONG BEACH, Wash. -- A boy drowned in the ocean near Long Beach, Wash. last Friday, and then was brought back to life, according to the blog of a photojournalist who said he witnessed the rescue and snapped photos.
Damian Mulinix reported from his blog, 'Picture Window' that Dale Ostrander was playing in the surf with other members of a church youth group when the boy got caught in a rip tide and pulled underwater.
A surf rescue team arrived within ten minutes and used a jet ski to pull Ostrander's body from the ocean, Mulinix said. Ostrander was not breathing and did not have a pulse, as paramedics tried for 10 minutes to revive him.
But doctors at the hospital were able to bring him back to consciousness and he was placed in an induced coma as part of his treatment at Oregon Health and Science University, according to the blog.
Then, several days later, Ostrander was brought out of the coma and was breathing on his own and speaking full sentences, according to Mulinix.
The church group was from Spanaway, Wash. A separate blog called 'Prayers for Dale' was created to organize support for Ostrander and his family.
Damian Mulinix also works for the Chinook Observer. He agreed to share his photos with kgw.com and KGW -TV.
