KATHMANDU, Nepal - Climbers on Friday found the body of one of two Indians who went missing last week near the top of Mount Everest, while a helicopter brought back the body of an Australian woman who died on the mountain.
The discovery of Paresh Chandra Nath’s body brings the official Everest death toll this year to four. Climbers found Nath’s body near the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit, and carried it down to Camp 4 at South Col, which sits at an altitude of 8,000 meters (26,000 feet), according to Wangchu Sherpa of the Trekking Camp Nepal agency.
Search teams were still looking for another Indian, Gautam Ghosh, who disappeared along with Nath five days ago and was presumed dead.
Earlier Friday, a helicopter brought the body of Australian climber Maria Strydom to Kathmandu airport. Her husband accompanied the body to Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital.
On Thursday, a helicopter brought down the body of Dutch climber Eric Holder. Attempts were being made to bring down the body of a third Indian climber Subhash Paul who also died on Everest.
Nearly 400 foreign climbers and Sherpa guides have made it to the top of Everest this year.
Separately, a Sherpa guide died on the adjacent peak of Lhotse and his body has been recovered.
