WSU student charged with rape at school's fraternity house

The former Sigma Nu member will have his first appearance in court this week for the assault and rape charges that allegedly happened in the fraternity's house.

A 21-year-old Washington State University student is due in court this week after being charged with second-degree assault and two counts of third-degree rape.

Sigma Nu member Jayce Carnahan is scheduled to appear in court for the first time on August 9 for a show cause hearing for failure to appear. Court records show he was scheduled for an arraignment on August 2 but he didn't show up.

The alleged assault and rape happened almost a year ago on August 24, 2023. They were reported to Pullman police by the victim, who is listed as Jane Doe on court documents, that same night.

According to court documents, Carnahan grabbed the victim as she was coming out of the bathroom at a fraternity party and forced her to drink more alcohol. Then he reportedly brought her to his room in the Sigma Nu house where he choked her and forced her to have sex with him twice.

Later that night, she went to the hospital where a rape kit and report were taken by a Pullman police officer. The victim left WSU after the alleged rapes.

A WSU spokesperson confirmed that Carnahan is still enrolled at the school, but is no longer a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.

Investigators connected Carnahan to the incident with DNA.

The maximum sentence for the assault is 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine, and for each rape, it is five years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
