OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Washington State Department of Natural Resources put a statewide burn ban into place Wednesday afternoon.
The order bans campfires, outdoor burning, use of charcoal briquettes and prescribed burns on all state-managed forest lands.
The move comes after consistent hot, dry conditions spurred a string of wildfires across the state, DNR said in a press release.
“The record-breaking temperatures we are seeing this week have left our state bone dry,” said Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, “I am asking everyone in Washington to do their part to protect our firefighters and our communities this summer. Please do not start a fire outside and stay alert when you are outdoors.”
The state agency called the burn ban a "critical step" to reduce the risk of wildfires as fire dangers stay elevated.
The order is set to expire Sept. 30, but DNR can extend or shorten the order depending on fire conditions.
State officials urge people spending time outside to stay prepared during fire season by being aware of rapid environmental changes, checking restrictions and conditions before heading out, properly securing tow chains and staying on marked trails.
If you see smoke, state officials are asking you to call 911 to report the fire. For fire season safety tips visit the DNR website.
