POST FALLS, Idaho. --- A local farmer created a barrier to prevent a fire from spreading across his fields.
On Sunday, Wade McLean was harvesting some of his wheat North of Post Falls when he saw smoke.
"I saw a puff of smoke. So I jumped down, came around here, and this was all flamed up underneath the hood,” McLean said.
The fire quickly started to spread in the wheat fields. McLean knew he had to move quickly to stop the fire from spreading even further.
"We all understand that when you have a fire, especially something like a grain field, you've got to knock it down as soon as you can,” McLean added.
Before fire crews arrived, a couple of neighbors showed up with their own water trucks to help put out the fire.
As the neighbors tried to put out the fire, McLean quickly got in to his tractor and used discs to make a line barrier in the ground. This barrier helped prevent the fire from spreading to other areas.
Kootenai County Fire and Rescue said that McLean and his neighbors made a difference in stopping the fire.
According to McLean, the winds on Sunday were causing the fire to constantly change directions.
"I've never seen the winds change so violently, so quick, ever in the 40 some years I've been out here,” he commented.
Despite the damage, McLean’s combine and crops were both insured.
