KENDRICK, Idaho — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has authorized the use of federal funds to aid with the firefighting costs in Latah and Nez Perce Counties.

The request for a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) was approved on July 16 around 9 p.m. by the FEMA Region 10 Administrator after he determined that the fire could constitute a major disaster if left without proper resources.

This is the first FMAG that has been approved in 2024 to help fight wildfires in Idaho.

FMAGs are provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund. The funds can be used for things like equipment use, repair and replacement, mobilization and demobilization and needed supplies.

This authorization makes FEMA funds available to pay 75 percent of the state’s eligible firefighting costs under the approved grant requirements.

In addition to the FMAG, an additional $985,111 will be made available to Idaho through the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) Post Fire in order to aid in mitigating the risk of future wildfires and other related hazards.

These funds are provided through the Disaster Recovery Reform Act of 2018, which outlines the designated areas that certain states and federally recognized tribes can receive assistance in protecting.
