Spokane County to address road repair funding amidst aftermath of Oregon Road Fire

Taking down the 14 dead trees along Salnave Road is expected to cost $6,800 while the 234 along Blanchard will cost around $66,000 to take down.

SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — Spokane County Commissioners will talk on Tuesday about using money from the federal government to fix roads after the Oregon Road Fire.

Currently, there are hundreds of trees around the burn area that are at risk of falling. Spokane County has marked 248 trees that are at risk of falling and they say they need to come down before the roads can be fixed. The county has begun taking down the dead trees along Salnave Road and along Blanchard Road.

The process to mark all the trees cost the county a little over $3,000. The county paid for it using federal money.

Taking down the 14 dead trees along Salnave Road is expected to cost $6,800 while the 234 along Blanchard will cost around $66,000 to take down.

The county hopes to pay for about 85% of the cost with federal money. The county says the cost to cut down the trees is so high because of the crews and equipment it will take.

County authorities will also check the actual road surfaces so they can fix any spots the fire damaged.

The County Commissioners meeting starts at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
