WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Level three evacuation orders are in place for residents near the Blue Creek Fire that has already charred more than 5,580 acres near Walla Walla.
Residents on Klicker Mountain Road and Blue Creek Road received level three evacuations, while Tracy Road, Scott Canyon Road, and Biscuit Ridge Road are at level two evacuations.
Those near Mill Creek Road above Blue Creek Road and Lewis Peak Road and the Lewis Peak area are all under level one evacuations.
According to DNR officials, the Blue Creek Fire is five percent contained and is burning ten miles east of Walla Walla. The fire is burning timber and short grass, officials said.
Authorities said one primary structure has burned, and others are threatened.
The fire started on Monday and is threatening almost 150 homes according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Officials said the fire was moving toward the Black Snake Subdivision. Evacuation orders were in place with 50 residents staying at a Red Cross Shelter at the Walla Walla County Fairgrounds.
FEMA said they have authorized the use of federal funds to help battle the fire. Officials said this is the second Fire Management Assistance Grant approved in the state this fire season.
There were reports of a helicopter crashing, but officials said the helicopter had a "hard landing" and that the pilot is okay. There is an NTSB investigation underway, officials said.
Firefighting resources on scene include three helicopters, 32 engines, and two dozers. The principal fire advisor confirmed the threat to the community and homes due to favorable burning conditions and extreme behavior.
Officials said they will continue to update the status of the fire and alert those nearby to any possible threats.
