West Plains Water Coalition holding educational meetings on PFAS in water sources

The meetings will be held on December 7 and December 14. Free childcare for kids ages 3-9 will be offered onsite during both meetings.

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — Two educational meetings will be held in Airway Heights this month about PFAS on the West Plains.

Organizers say the goal of these meetings is to start a dialogue on what PFAS are and how they can protect drinking water on the West Plains.

The chemical is known to cause a number of health problems in human and is often found in firefighting foam that is used to fight petroleum fires at airports. Because of that, military bases and airports often deal with contaminated water sources.

The first educational meeting will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. at The Hub in Airway Heights.

Spokane’s Regional Health Director, Dr. Frank Velazquez along with Co-Director of the University of Washington Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit, Dr. Catherine Karr will discuss how to talk with your doctors about the topic, suspected PFAS health effects, drinking water concerns, blood tests and strategies for family safety.

The second meeting will be next Thursday, December 14. It will focus on Washington’s cleanup process and public participation at the Spokane Airport PFAS site. Jeremey Schmidt and Erika Beresovoy from the Washington Department of Ecology Toxics Cleanup Program will talk about how you can be involved in plans to investigate and remedy PFAS contamination at Spokane International Airport.

Free childcare for kids ages 3-9 will be offered onsite during both meetings. The meetings are being hosted by the West Plains Water Coalition.
