YAKIMA, Wash. — A new assistant attorney will help prosecute cases involving missing and murdered Indigenous people (MMIP) in the northwest region.

Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) Bree R. Black Horse joined the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Washington as part of the Justice Department's MMIP regional program. The program will prioritize MMIP cases as part of a 2022 initiative to promote the public safety of Indigenous people.

Black Horse will work out of Yakima and serve Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho and California.

“For far too long Indigenous men, women and children have suffered violence at rates higher than many other demographics,” Black Horse said. “As I step into this role, I look forward to working with our local, state, and tribal partners to identify concrete ways of reducing violence and improving public safety in Indian country and elsewhere. I also look forward to honing my skills as a federal prosecutor and working with others who are dedicated to DOJ’s mission to seek justice on behalf of victims and their families.”

She previously worked with other Tribal governments to help them navigate federal, state and tribal law. She worked as a law clerk to Chief U.S. District Court Judge Brian M. Morris for the District of Montana, and as a legal aid attorney and public defender for the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation.

Black Horse is one of five MMIP attorneys nationwide to support U.S. Attorney's Offices in the U.S. to address and fight ongoing issues involving MMIP and tribal safety. She will be formally sworn in at a later time.
