Colville Reservation Tribes unveil new monument on Veterans Day

This year's event featured a special treat: the unveiling of a new monument. The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary monument was added.

NESPELEM, Wash. — A small group of people from the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation gathered to honor current and past veterans on a windy Veterans Day in Nespelem.

"We like to put people in a spotlight that do good things on behalf of our tribe," said veteran and Colville Tribes member Andy Joseph said.

Joseph helped organize the Veterans Day ceremony. The ceremony happened every year, giving a chance for veterans like Vincent McDonald to connect with old friends.

"I'm proud to be here and it's comforting to share stories with other veterans that may or may not have gone through I went through," said McDonald.

This year featured the unveiling of a new monument called The American Legion Ladies Auxiliary monument. It features the names of women who served in the women's auxiliary, a group who provided health and supportive services for the military.

"Every year, don't forget them. We love them. Pray for them," said 92 year old honoree Barbara Aripa.

The celebration included traditional Native American traditions for all veterans. This monument is now open to the public at the Tribe's headquarters in Nespelem.
