Here's what rules are in place to protect Washington workers outside in high temperatures

In the state of Washington, there are rules in place to protect outside workers.

SPOKANE, Wash. — As the extreme heat continues, people who work outside are the most at-risk for heat-related injuries.

In Washington State, there are currently rules in place to protect outside workers. The emergency heat rules kick in when temperatures reach 90 degrees.

Also, cooldown periods of at least 10 minutes are required every two hours.

Longer and more-frequent breaks are mandated when temperatures continue to rise to 100 degrees.

Employers are also required to monitor the temperature and air quality.

The rules also include providing cold water and shade.
