Washington State Patrol reports 19 crashes, nine in Spokane County, following Monday's snow

Sergeant Greg Riddell said Spokane got pretty lucky with the timing of the snowfall Monday morning.
There were six crashes between 10 a.m. and noon on Monday.

SPOKANE, Wash. — By Monday night, Washington state patrol reported 19 total collisions across the district, nine of which were in Spokane County.

Sergeant Greg Riddell said Spokane got pretty lucky with the timing of the snowfall Monday morning. He said it didn't start to impact the area until about 10 a.m., which was after the morning commute. Even the three collisions that happened just before noon in Spokane, he said, were either minor or no injuries at all.

Still, the trend with Monday's collisions is driving too fast for the road conditions, Riddell said.

"The law says you have to be traveling to safe speed at all times to avoid a collision due to weather conditions," Riddell said. "So we have to be driving [at] a safe and prudent speed during those weather conditions."

As for Spokane city streets, conditions have improved since Monday afternoon. Main roads are mostly wet with slush in some places. But still, watch out for slick spots.  On the side roads though, it’s thicker and slicker. So approach those areas with caution.

Late afternoon, the city of Spokane tweeted “Streets crews have been out treating arterials, curves, and hills since this morning.” It’s asking drivers to slow down and drive for conditions.
