WALLA WALLA, Wash. — A Walla Walla Fire Department (WWFD) firefighter died while on duty on Sunday morning. Fire Engineer Ryan Pleasants had worked for WWFD for 20 years.

WWFD first hired Pleasants as a firefighter and medic in 2005. The fire department later promoted Pleasants to Fire Engineer in July 2023.

"Ryan will be forever missed by all his brothers and sisters of the WWFD," the WWFD said in a Facebook post,  "Our deepest condolences go out to his Family and his community,"

The fire department did not release the firefighter's cause of death. The memorial service for Pleasants will be announced at a later date.

Walla Walla City Manager Elizabeth Chamberlain issued a statement following the death of Walla Walla Fire Department Fire Engineer Ryan Pleasants. “The City of Walla Walla team is here to support the Walla Walla Fire Department as they tragically lost one of their own. The City sends our thoughts and condolences to Ryan's family during this extremely difficult time. The City is grateful to the College Place, Pasco, and Richland fire departments, and Walla Walla County Fire District 4, for stepping in to assist with Walla Walla’s emergency responses.
