Man charged with first-degree murder in Garland District shooting appears in court

Caleb Carder is accused of killing 42-year-old Joshua Paine following an incident between the pair that started in their vehicles.

SPOKANE, Wash. — 28-year-old Caleb Carder made his first court appearance Friday in connection with a deadly shooting in the Garland District. Carder is accused of killing 42-year-old Joshua Paine following an incident between the pair that started in their vehicles.

Carder pleaded not guilty in court.

Paine's family filled the courtroom for Carder's first appearance. Before the judge set his bond, Paine's family read a statement, saying, "The victim's family, they're all here. And they just wanted to express that the victim was extremely loved, so therefore they would like a very high bond amount."

KREM 2 obtained a video from a business near the shooting that shows a black SUV speeding in front of a silver truck. Both cars then stop and both drivers exit their vehicles. Witnesses reported that both drivers appeared ready to fight. Paine started backing away, and that's when Carder allegedly shot him.

When police arrived, Carder was providing medical aid to Paine and told officers he was the shooter. Police took over the medical help, but Paine was pronounced dead just before 6 a.m. Carder

A judge set Carder's bond at $5 million.

Paine's wife informed police he was likely on his way to work when the shooting occurred. Paine's family, who declined to appear on camera, described him as an amazing man, husband, and father.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Paine's family. The description on the page says he was born and raised in Spokane and was a generous, loving person.
