SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane’s VetsGarage and Shotgun Studios are cohosting their first Veteran Art Show on Saturday, November 16 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Shotgun Studios.
“We are honored to be part of this exhibit,” said Kathy Thamm of Shotgun Studios, whose husband John Thamm is an artist and veteran.
VetsGarage says the event will feature paintings, drawings, photography, fine woodcraft and live edge furniture. Some pieces will be available for attendees to buy.
Additionally, hand-tied fishing flies by the “Fly Tying Group” at the Spokane Vet Center in Spokane Valley will also be for sale. Money raised from these sales will benefit VetsGarage, which offers several accessible, educational training opportunities for veterans to express their creativity.
VetsGarage says the art show was conceived to showcase the work of local veterans, as many use art as a way to heal from the stress following military service.
Tzena Scarborough, who served in the US Army and is a member of the American Legion Post named after Vernon Baker, has been woodturning for 4 years at the VetsGarage and calls it "wood therapy."
Scarborough says making art changed her life and built her own woodturning studio in her garage after retiring.
Notable artists and work on display at the art show will include:
- River landscapes by L.R. Montgomery, U.S. Army
- Paintings and hand-turned wood pieces by Ralph Noll, U.S. Army
- Portraits of veterans by John Thamm, Naval Air Reserve
- Landscape paintings by the late Darrell Sullens, U.S. Navy
