MOSCOW, Idaho — University of Idaho (U of I) architecture students completed their designs for the Vandal Healing Garden and Memorial, built to honor those who died while enrolled at the university.
Plans for the garden were established after four University of Idaho students were killed off campus. U of I students hosted a workshop to hear community insight on the garden in September.
The workshop covered many parts of the garden, including designing memorials and potential building sites on campus.
“This is an incredibly important project not only to me personally, but also to the institution,” Dean of Students Blaine Eckles said. “I told the students as they started the semester they had the heart of the university in their hands, so treat it carefully. They have done so.”
U of I students also met with the families of several students who will be memorialized. The architecture team hopes to include what they learned about the memorialized students in their designs.
“We focused on the senses we use while experiencing a garden, especially one meant to aid with the healing process,” said Stuart, a senior from Idaho Falls. “We all knew we needed a timeless space that captured Vandal energy, meaning our designs needed to be humble, natural and inviting.”
Architecture students are hoping to finalize and approve their designs with U of I by the end of summer 2024. Construction can begin once fundraising meets the garden's estimated costs.
