SPOKANE, Wash. — The winds were strong across the Inland Northwest, with Spokane seeing gusts around 35 miles per hour on Sunday.
"Stronger winds are pretty predictable here," said Barlett Tree Experts arborist Kevin Bulla.
Bulla deals with trees before and after wind storms. According to Bulla, trees can be dangerous in high winds, with the potential to fall on homes, cars, and even people.
"Even a healthy tree has the possibility of falling over, especially if we have like heavy wet snow load or very saturated soils," said Bulla. "Trees closest to your house, your driveway, your streets, sidewalks,"
Matt Barton is a landscaper who owns his own company in Spokane. He said people should stay vigilant in a wind storm because it's not just trees that can cause damage.
"Everybody underestimates the power of the wind," Barton said. "You don't want to come out and have something heavy fall on your brand-new concrete patio."
He said the best way to avoid damage from a storm is to plan. Afterward, people should clean up debris as fast as they can.
"You always just want to be able to have a safe place to get to and from your house to your car," Barton said.
People can also lose power in a windstorm. Avista said if anyone suffers a power outage, they should turn off all appliances that were on before the power went out, keep the refrigerator and freezer closed as much as possible, and lower the thermostat on electric heat sources to an absolute minimum.
