Here's how much skiers, snowboarders will pay to park at Summit at Snoqualmie this season

Summit at Snoqualmie staff announced parking permits will be required in all lots to address ongoing parking problems.

SNOQUALMIE, Wash — We're still about a month and a half out to the start of ski season for the Summit at Snoqualmie. Early December is when the resort typically expects to open. But already we're learning about a change in parking fees.

In a Facebook post, Summit at Snoqualmie staff announced Sunday parking permits will be required to address parking woes. They will be required in all lots from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily starting Nov. 18 through April 30.

"It's home, it's been home for the last eight years, a lot of good skiing, good memories, fun community up here," said Alexa Gaulke.

Despite these wonderful memories, Alexa Gualke, a part-time employee at the Summit and longtime season pass holder, describes Snoqualmie’s parking situation as "chaos… absolute chaos."

Chaos that looks like long lines of cars and overcrowded lots during the season.

"There are so many cars and traffic up here that I feel like people will be parking without permits, and then there could be a bit of an issue with people just parking and taking away from the permit parking for those who have actually paid for it," said Gaulke.

According to the popular ski area, the parking permit breakdown goes like this: It'll be free for season pass holders. For skiers and snowboarders buying single-day lift tickets or using their Ikon pass, the permit will be $5 per vehicle, and for parking for general visitors who are not skiing or riding at the resort, the permit is $55.

"I'm sure it is frustrating or I'm sure it is hard for a lot of people," said Paul Meyer, who has been going to Snoqualmie since he was a child. He's an Ikon pass holder now and has budgeted for this expensive passion. But he's worried tacking on more fees will continue to deter people from this sport he loves.

"Adding these additional costs just heightens the barrier for entry," said Meyer.

Distribution of permit codes and a new parking website where people can buy permits will begin in November.

KING 5 also asked officials with Summit at Snoqualmie if they believe adding parking permits will lead to an increase in illegal parking and people parking illegally on the road. A spokesperson responded, “It may result in some; however, our hope is that it results in more carpooling.”
