COLVILLE, Wash. — Colville Police arrested an escaped inmate on March 31 after a Stevens County Sheriff Deputy left a door open into the jail.
According to a press release sent out by Stevens County, a corrections deputy was taking an intoxicated man into jail and did not fully latch the door. An inmate worker later noticed the door was not latched and proceeded to take clothing from the dress out room then walked out the door.
According to the sheriff’s department, inmate workers perform tasks like custodial work, laundry and preparing food within the jail and are not locked in cells. The department added that inmate workers are generally “low escape” risks to be able to perform their tasks.
A Colville police officer located the escaped inmate near the city limits of Colville. The escaped inmate was on the run for six minutes before being captured.
In a Facebook post the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office said, “This incident occurred due to a series of errors made by the Sheriff's Office and the blame lays squarely on us. We are reviewing and changing policies and procedures to ensure this does not happen again.”
