SPOKANE, Wash. — Drivers will want to give themselves extra time on Monday morning after a new round of snow overnight brought slick conditions to the roads.
Officers across the Inland Northwest have been busy with cars sliding off major highways all around the region.
South of Spokane, the Washington State Patrol closed Highway 195 at Plaza Road because of "extremely dangerous ice conditions." A photo from the scene showed multiple vehicles that had crashed or slid off the road. This is an area south of Spangle. Washington Department of Transportation said it has crews on the way to treat the roads in the area.
Washington State Patrol also responded to a slide-off on I-90 near Liberty Lake around 7:30 am. While the vehicle was on the shoulder and not blocking, traffic was still slow in the area. Troopers reminded drivers to slow down and take their time.
In north Spokane, a collision blocked the northbound on ramp to Highway 395 from the Freya Street roundabout for most of the morning. Two trucks were on the scene working to clear it as of 7:30 a.m.
Weather Forecast
March is starting off more snowy than not. After 2.6" of snow Saturday, more has already fallen this Monday morning in Spokane. Additionally, the graupel will feature in the afternoon for the next two days.
This morning, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect until 10am for the northern areas of the Inland Northwest plus the Silver Valley area as snow total will be around 2-4". As of 7am, most of the snow has already ended save for near Sandpoint. The afternoon hours will see more snow and graupel showers with temperatures in the upper 30s across the Inland Northwest. Thankfully, graupel won't have an impact on road conditions.
The biggest impact to the region will be how cold it gets and the resulting black ice tonight and Tuesday morning. Low temperatures will hit the low 20s and teens in most spots. So the melted snow from today will re-freeze quickly tonight resulting in very icy conditions.
