SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Lands Council and the Spokane River Forum are hosting the 21st annual Spokane River Clean-Up on Saturday, September 16.

Those interested in volunteering will work to pick up trash along the river to improve the environmental health and safety of the Spokane River.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those who want to volunteer must sign up at the Lands Council website and sign a liability waiver to participate.

The clean-up is a self-guided event, meaning there will be no formal meeting place or time. Volunteers can choose a place to clean along the river and can join the cleanup any time before 2 p.m.

Trash bags will be distributed the week before the clean-up, from Wednesday, Sept. 13 to Friday, Sept. 15 between 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Saranac Lobby on West Main Street.

Volunteers are also welcome to bring their own trash bags if they cannot attend the trash bag distribution.

The Lands Council says that trash will be collected by the City of Spokane at designated areas by 2 p.m. Any trash left after 2 p.m. or left at other locations will not be collected and will likely end up back in the river.

A map of the designated pickup locations can be found on the Lands Council website.

The Lands Council says they are unable to provide gloves but recommend that volunteers bring cloth gloves of their own to use for the cleanup. They also recommend wearing long pants and supportive shoes for working along the riverbanks.

The Lands Council is also partnering with Roast House to provide volunteers with free coffee on Saturday, Sept. 15. Volunteers can go to either Roast House location and tell staff that they volunteered with the Lands Council to receive a free drip coffee.
