Medical Examiner identifies woman found dead in Northeast Spokane

Investigators say the woman had injuries 'believed to have been caused' by a dog but the cause and manner of death are still pending.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane County Medical Examiner has identified a woman found dead in Northwest Spokane on Wednesday. She is Carol Streit. The medical examiner has not yet ruled on the cause or manner of her death.

Spokane Regional Health District, where Streit worked, remembered her on Friday.

"We are shocked and saddened by the news," SRHD said in a statement. "Carol was a joy to work with and was loved by her patients. She had a smile and laugh that was infectious; you couldn’t help but grin and laugh along. Our hearts go out to her family. As colleagues and friends of Carol, we share in their grief for the loss of such a wonderful person. She will be missed."

On Thursday, the Spokane County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) released new details on an ongoing death investigation in Northeast Spokane.

SCSO deputies responded to reports of a dead woman in a vacant field near East Buckeye Avenue and North Custer Road. When they arrived, they found an unleashed dog next to her body, who was displaying "protective/aggressive behavior." Detectives were eventually able to get the dog away from the woman and begin checking her condition.

SCSO said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial information suggests the woman had not been lying in the field for a long time before she was found, according to SCSO. Detectives also found the only obvious injuries on her body were to her upper body and "are believed to have been caused by the dog" found next to her. More testing is needed to confirm if the woman died from these injuries.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner has not released the identity of the woman or the cause and manner of her death.

Investigators are still working to determine what happened leading up to the woman's death. SCSO confirmed to KREM 2 the dog is being held at Spokane County Regional Animal Protection (SCRAPS).

SCSO said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
