Spokane Mayor signs Safe Streets order following recent traffic deaths

The mayor announced two street safety initiatives for pedestrians in response to two traffic deaths in the past month.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Janet Mann was killed in an alleged hit-and-run incident at the intersection of Browne and Main Street last month.

In response, Mayor Lisa Brown announced two initiatives designed to help improve street safety across Spokane.

The first is an executive order with multiple components, including a traffic safety camera program.

Mayor Brown said she's working with Spokane Police as well to add more cameras to busy intersections and high-speed areas.

She said the order is intended to focus on safe street infrastructure in neighborhoods.

"The Office of Neighborhood Services will work with the streets department and fleet services to double the mobile speed feedback program over the next two years," Brown said.

Under the second initiative, Brown launched the city's new transportation commission. She said the group will analyze data from different areas and then recommend policies to eliminate potential traffic deaths and injuries in problematic areas.

"I have a route to get around Spokane on my bike that's mostly safe," Lauren Pangborn said.

Pangborn is the vice chair of the Spokane Bicycle Advisory Board. She said she's in support of the initiatives.

"With the unfortunate passing of Janet Mann, she had the right of way when she was hit, and she passed," Pangborn said.

"If you have better infrastructure built up, people will use it," Pangborn continued. "That's a beautiful thing."

Brown says the commission is looking for members, and asks anyone interested to keep an eye out on the application form when it becomes available at a later date.
