One dead in house fire, possible explosion in northwest Spokane

Neighbors said the fire started in the garage and an explosion caused the ceiling to collapse.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Fire Department (SFD) is investigating a house fire that left one person dead on West Elmhurst Avenue in northwest Spokane Tuesday night. Neighbors reported the fire at 6:19 p.m.

Callers to 9-1-1 reported the fire had started in an attached garage and included an explosion, which caused the garage ceiling to collapse.

Firefighters arrived at the house within four minutes and found the fire had spread from the garage to the house. Firefighters said they "faced challenging conditions inside the house, including intense heat and thick smoke, which limited visibility to the floor level and required them to search by feel."

During the search, firefighters found a man who was dead.

Fire investigators are working to figure out what caused the fire and reported explosion. They also want to determine why the fire spread so quickly.

This is a developing news story and we will provide more updates as we receive them.
