Spokane begins transition to single space meters in downtown core

A second round of parking meter swaps is scheduled for later in 2024.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane will begin replacing parking meters in downtown on Monday. The city says they will replace 200 dual space meters with 400 single space meters.

Officials believe that moving to single space meters in the core of downtown will streamline the current parking reservation process.

“The only aspect of these new meters that will be different from the status quo will be that we’re changing from dual-space to single-space. Everything else, including functionality, rates, two-hour time limits and even the color (lilac) will remain the same. These meters will also not be installed in any new areas,” said Luis Garcia, Director of Parking Services.

The city said that during the replacement process on blocks with active installation, parking customers will not be subjected to tickets for lack of payment, but all other parking rules will still apply.

The old dual space meters will be reinstalled around the city. A map of the affected areas can be found here.

There are more than 5,000 street parking spaces and more than 3,400 paid parking spots in the city.
