Turkey problem gobbles up Spokane's South Hill

There's a growing number of turkeys in Spokane's South Hill neighborhood. Now Wildlife officials want to take action
Spokane's South Hill neighborhood has a turkey problem. Now wildlife officials have a plan to stuff these gobblers in their tracks.

SPOKANE, Wash. – The great outdoors in Spokane provides a natural beauty that both humans and animals enjoy.

Dogs out on walks, ducks floating in a pond, and turkeys running down your neighborhood street.

There are hundreds of turkeys and they are all over the South Hill.

Jule Shultz lives in South Hill and said he sees the big birds every time he strolls through the neighborhood.

"They got out of the way pretty quickly," Shultz said, "but there were a couple toms that didn't care if I was there."

One time Shultz said he saw not just one or two turkeys, but 38 turkeys.

"You could see that they could get out of hand if there are more than the 38 we occasionally see," Shultz said.

State wildlife workers said they are now taking action. In a few weeks, they said a team of volunteers will be working with the state to find the eggs laid by the giant birds.

Officials said if the eggs are young, meaning a chick has not formed yet, the egg will be dipped in oil which prevents any possible growth inside the egg.

Wildlife experts also said no living turkeys will actually be killed. They also stressed this experiment is meant to control the population.
