'Tiny homes' in Spokane Valley could help alleviate homelessness

Officials with Spokane Valley said they have shown a lot of support for tiny homes to help house the homeless.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – Tiny homes are gaining popularity in the United States and not just as a new style of living. While a few already exist in our region, there’s a chance Spokane Valley may be looking at one in the future – and how it can help the homeless.

Officials with Spokane Valley said they have shown a lot of support for tiny homes to help house the homeless.

The Othello community and another on 22nd and Union in Seattle are built for the purpose of providing homes for the homeless. According to our sister station, those are only temporary homes. There are also non-profits in Northern Idaho that also build tiny homes to benefit the homeless.

The project in Spokane Valley could be a permanent, tiny home neighborhood.

The largest space that would be available for a tiny home here is only 344 square feet. Knowing Spokane’s homeless problem, many in the Valley believe projects like these could be a possible remedy.

Ian Robertson is the project head and he has been spearheading the idea of getting tiny homes in Spokane Valley. He said it is a way to provide for the needy to stand on their own two feet.

Robertson said some of the home designs could cost about $20,000 but he said it would not be at the tax payers expense. He also said he hopes to have the project complete by 2017.
