Spokane Park Board approves much debated sculpture for Riverfront Park

Board members said it could be a place for people to play guitar, have a picnic or see the park from a new vantage point.

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Park Board voted Thursday in favor of adopting the Riverfront Park Committee plan for the “Step Well” sculpture.

During a meeting on Thursday, board members said it is unclear where the sculpture will be located in the park. They are deciding between putting it in the meadow by the clock tower or in the conservation area west of the promenade. Initially, it was going to go by the clock tower but the artist thinks there is already too much there.

Board members said it could be a place for people to play guitar, have a picnic or see the park from a new vantage point. The sculpture is an interactive piece designed to fit 75 people on the steps inside. The sculpture’s size would resemble another iconic Riverfront Park landmark: The Red Wagon, but it will be a lot bigger.

The City of Spokane and Spokane Arts said the piece comes at a price tag of $359,000, under the $500,000 budget.

Spokane could see the “Step Well” sculpture in the park by 2020.
