SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — The income limit for Spokane County property tax exemption has increased by $10,000, meaning more residents are eligible to apply.
Spokane County Assessor Tom Konis announced Thursday income limit increases for seniors, people with disabilities and veterans with disabilities seeking property tax exemption. Beginning with the 2024 property tax year, individuals making less than $50,000 a year can apply for an exemption as long as they meet the other program qualifications.
The increase comes after the Washington state House of Representatives passed House Bill 1355 last year. The bill updated the statewide qualifications needed to apply for property tax exemption.
Spokane County's previous income limit to be eligible was $40,000, but has now increased to $50,000 for the next tax year. In addition to the income threshold, applicants must also be any of the following by Dec. 31, 2023:
- At least 61 years old
- At least 57 years old and the surviving spouse/domestic partner of a person who was exempt at the time of their death
- Unable to work because of a disability
- A disabled veteran with a service-connected evaluation of at least 80% or receiving compensation from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs at the 100% rate for a service-connected disability
The passage of House Bill 1355 also means income thresholds for tax relief programs must be adjusted every three years instead of every five years. Applications for the 2024 tax year based upon 2023 qualifications are currently available, and notices about the process will be mailed with tax statements on March 1, 2024.
