MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. – A Spokane County Sheriff’s deputy saved a man’s life who was overdosing on Saturday in Medical Lake.
Deputy Alex Velikodnyy responded to a report of an unconscious man in a carport on East Campbell Street around 12:45 p.m. When he arrived on scene, he found a Good Samaritan giving the man CPR on the ground. Deputy Velikodnyy found the man was not breathing and did not have a pulse. Then, he took over doing CPR but his condition did not change.
The deputy believed the man’s symptoms were a sign of an overdose and asked the Good Samaritan to take over CPR while he got his overdose reversal kit, which contained Narcan.
Officials said the deputy administered the Narcan and within a few seconds the man was breathing on his own and a few minutes later he was conscious. The man was then taken to the hospital for treatment.
Spokane County Sheriff’s Officials said Deputy Velikodnyy received the overdose kit and training on its use the night before through a new grant-funded pilot program between the Medical Reserve Corps of Eastern Washington and local law enforcement.
