Power outage causes chaos in downtown Spokane

Avista crews are at Walnut and 4th patrolling a downed power line.

SPOKANE, Wash. – It seemed like complete chaos in downtown Spokane Tuesday afternoon after a power line was knocked down and caused a small power outage.

As of 3:10 p.m., about 101 customers were without power. Avista crews were working to fix a downed power line that was knocked down by a tree at Walnut and 4th. As Avista crews worked on the downed power line, the Spokane Fire department quickly put out the fire it caused just across the street.

Avista said they plan to have power restored by 5:15 p.m. and they are working to reroute power to some customers.

The traffic lights at the intersection of Walnut and 4th Avenue are back up and running after the outages. But that wasn't the case earlier Tuesday. This resulted in quite a series of unfortunate events. Confusion among drivers began to rise, only adding to the apparent chaos caused by the outage. Power was out at this intersection of Third Avenue and Maple, where emergency crews responded to a crash involving three vehicles. Emergency crews confirm everyone involved are ok.
