Gov. Jay Inslee visiting site of former I-90 homeless encampment on Friday

The governor will also meet with Catholic Charities executives, residents at the Catalyst project and officers at the Airway Heights Correction Center.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Washington Gov. Jay Inslee will be in Spokane Friday to meet with state employees and executives from housing non-profits.

The governor started his day at the site of the now closed I-90 homeless encampment, formerly known as Camp Hope. He then plans to meet with Catholic Charities executives and residents at the Catalyst housing project.

"Not just a success for Spokane, it's a success for the state of Washington," Gov. Inslee said.

He said he wants to see this solution seen statewide. He shared it's all about collaborating.

"The city did not cooperate, the last sheriff wanted to make this a political football instead of cooperating with us, that slowed down the effort," Governor Inslee said.

Catholic Charities, Chief Stabilization Officer, Dawn Kinder, said, "Creating this kind of safety for folks, where they've got the private bedrooms, bathrooms to use. But they still have wraparound support of services and programming aimed at getting them out of here and on their own two feet in the community. It's a brand new concept."

While in Spokane, the governor also planned to make stops at the Airway Heights Correction Center and the Spokane airport.

At 11:15 a.m. on Friday, Inslee was meeting with state agency service providers at the former homeless camp by the freeway. While there, he planned to tour the site. At 11:50 a.m., he'll meet executives from Catholic Charities Eastern Washington (CCEW) and people living at Catalyst, some of who previously lived at the homeless encampment.

At 1:45 p.m., the governor toured the Airway Heights Correction Center and meet with employees and inmates.

Finally, Inslee closed out his Spokane visit at the Spokane International Airport (GEG), where he met with development executives and discuss their plans to expand and upgrade the airport.
