Inmate commits suicide in Spokane County jail cell

Officials said the inmate was secured in a cell and was not housed with anyone else at the time of the incident.

ID=18526719SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane County Sheriff's Major Crimes detectives are investigating the death of an inmate at the Spokane County Jail.

A Spokane County Corrections Officer said he found John Everitt, 46, at 2:50 p.m. unresponsive with a sheet around his neck. Officials said Everitt was secured in a cell and was not housed with anyone else at the time of the incident. Authorities said the officer immediately called for assistance and began life-saving efforts.

Jail staff said they continued efforts to revive him but were unsuccessful. Spokane County Sheriff's Deputies and Major Crimes Detectives were called to the scene to investigate.

Officials said it is standard procedure to immediately investigate any in-custody death to determine the facts of the incident.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner determined Everitt's death was a suicide. Officials said the cause of death was hanging by ligature.
