SPOKANE, Wash. — A woman attempted to pull a "Karambit-style" fighting knife on Spokane Valley deputies as they tried to detain her Thursday night.

Deputies responded to a call about a homeless woman, who was reportedly high, bothering residents at an apartment complex in the 100 block of S. Havana Street around 10:20 p.m. Thursday, according to the Spokane Valley Police Department.

The caller told deputies the suspect, later identified as Angela M. Holman, 34, was possibly high and bothering people, the police department said. Once deputies arrived, they found the suspect laying in the grass on the east side of the property, the police department said.

One of the deputies started a conversation with the suspect, while the other observed, the police department said. The suspect said she lived in the area, but admitted she did not live at the apartments or knew anyone who did, according to the police department.

The woman initially cooperated with deputies until they asked for her name, according to the police department. The suspect then tried to pull a curved, fighting-style knife from under her jacket and deputies struggled to get it away from her before they were able to detain her, the police department said.

A Karambit knife was originally designed as a farming tool, but evolved into an everyday-carry choice for overall utility, combat and self-defense, according to the Karambit Tactical Knives website.

The suspect continued to resist even after officers pinned her to the ground and back-up arrived, the police department said.

Deputies found a sunglasses case containing "a white crystalline substance believed to be Methamphetamine, and a brown tar-like substance, believed to be heroin," according to Spokane Valley Police.
