Family of man killed in Northeast Spokane shooting: 'It was very senseless'

The family said Devan Bouge was fun, loving and artistic. The father of two loved gaming, comic books and drawing, all interested he shared with his uncle Ben Masuoka.

The family of a man killed in a shooting Tuesday night near Chief Garry Park are speaking out about his death.

He has been identified by family as 24-year-old Devan Bouge. Court documents said Bouge was found dead in the home he shared with his girlfriend, Sasha Gibson. Gibson was also shot and is in critical condition. Police arrested Gibson's estranged husband, 35-year-old Donovan Gibson, and charged him with murder and attempted murder.

The family said Bouge was fun, loving and artistic. He leaves behind a 5 year old son and a 4 year old daughter.

He also loved gaming, comic books and drawing, all interested he shared with his uncle Ben Masuoka.

Masuoka took part in raising Bouge but he was more like a big brother.

“It's kind of my job to make sure he's on the right path, it's my job to make sure he's not goofing around. And get him away from things he didn't need to be a part of,” Masuoka said.

He could not protect him from what would happen next. Tuesday night, Spokane police responded to a call at a home on North Stone Street. Bouge was shot and killed.

"It was very senseless of how he was taken away from us. It's disgusting," Masuoka said. "I don't wish what happened to him on anybody and my heart goes out to Sasha in her time of healing as well."

The two had only been dating for a month, but Bouge's family had already seen a change in him.

“When we started hearing how happy he has been lately and what he was thinking about what he wanted to do with his future, it sparked a light that we hadn't seen in years," he explained. "We were so happy to see and hear how happy he was with her. So, when I found out the only thing in my heart was hate, obviously sorrow but hate."

As Gibson continues to fight for her life, Bouge's family reflects on the life they lost and what could have been.

"It's just very surreal right now still. I think I speak for everybody when I say that I wish I could just hold him again, yell at him again, and see, I would have loved to see the man he would have become," Masuoka said.

The family has started a GoFundMe to help pay for Bouge's funeral services and Sasha's medical bills.

Donovan is charged with first degree murder and first degree attempted murder. His bond has been set at $1 million.
