SPOKANE, Wash. -- As development in Spokane continues many on the South Hill now have varying opinions when it comes to a new project called the "Garden District."
The Garden District will be built on 25 acres of land near the corner of 29th Avenue and Southeast Boulevard.
Greenstone Homes, the developer of this project and many others in the region including Kendall Yards, has described the future space as an "urban mixed use neighborhood with a pedestrian focus and extensive trails and open space."
Currently the land is a forest area with several trails and a nearby neighborhood.
Greenstone Homes would transform the land to include retail, commercial, office, residential, park and open spaces for use much like Kendall Yards.
KREM 2 reached out to several homeowners in the area who did not want to be on camera.
One resident said he was for the project if they start fixing up the old streets in the neighborhood that have endured years of weather.
Another resident walking his dog on the trails where the Garden District would go, said he was not looking forward to seeing 230 housing units when he looks across the street. He was also worried about extra traffic in the neighborhood, especially if the project were to include a connection from Crestline Street to a point on Southeast Boulevard.
Another resident was for the project, but only if the Crestline Street and Southeast Boulevard connection is removed from the plan.
At Monday night's city council meeting, council members are set to vote on a public hearing to remove the Crestline Street/Southeast Boulevard connection from the plan.
A petition was submitted representing over 95 percent of the abutting property.
KREM 2 also reached out to the CEO of Greenstone Homes and we have not yet heard back, however on the company's website, it said the company has a desire "to be transparent and provide information to the community."
