SPOKANE, Wash. – One Spokane family is dealing with more than just storm recovery on Sunday.
Dennis Gilbert is hospitalized as he battles stage 4 cancer in his jaw. He is schedule to be released from the hospital on Monday but he is does not have a home to go back too. His home was destroyed during Tuesday's severe windstorm.
"It's amazing no one was here," Gilbert's life partner said. "Everything here was destroyed."
The couple was away from their home during the wind storm and got a call that their home would not be the same when they went back.
"All the electronic stuff. That must've been what exploded and shot glass everywhere all over the house, just to little small pieces," she said.
With the payment for home repair looming, they have even more financial struggles ahead. Gilbert had surgery last month and the medical bills are starting to stack up.
Now, they have no home to go back to once he gets released from the hospital on Monday.
"Now the issue is, bacteria and germs cannot get into that grafting area," she said. Insulation still hangs in their home and glass is stills scattered across their floor.
Volunteers have stepped up and are working to clean up their house.
"We had worked really hard to get this place totally ready for him to come home to," she said.
