SPOKANE, Wash. — More than 450 middle school basketball teams competed in the Washington Middle School Basketball Championship.
It’s one of Spokane’s biggest events. Thousands of athletes and their families filled gyms and arenas around Spokane and Spokane Valley.
The championship included both school and club teams around the state competing for the state title.
Each team competes in at least four games.
Players showcased the skills they’ve worked all season to practice.
Cole Scminara and his Snohomish teammates walked off the court wearing smiles of victory. They were advancing to the next round of games.
“It was pretty good. We did pretty good defense. We just had stops. We were making points. Our shots were dropping,” he said.
Scminara was one of the many athletes fighting hard for a chance to win the state championship.
The tournament began on Friday and continues through Sunday.
Winners from Saturday’s games continue in the tournament for a chance to play in the state championship game.
