Spokane cooling resources available due to Heat Advisories

Cooling centers will be open to the public this weekend due to extreme heat.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane will provide cooling resources for residents due to extreme heat and Heat Advisories in the forecast.

By the Spokane Municipal Code, the city is required to provide resources when the temperature is expected to reach 95 degrees or above for at least 2 consecutive days. This weekend, Friday and Saturday are forecasted with highs of 95 and 96 respectively.

A spokesperson for the city says that those seeking relief from the heat can visit Spokane Public Library locations during their regular opening hours. Some libraries will extend their hours on the weekend to provide cooling services.

The Liberty Park, Indian Trail and South Hill libraries will offer extended hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and the Liberty Park and Central libraries will offer extended hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Regular library hours and locations can be found here.

Additionally, the Spokane Transit Authority (STA) will offer free rides to those going to and from a cooling space when the temperature is 95 degrees or above.

Passengers who board an STA bus and indicate that they are traveling to a cooling area will be allowed to ride for free.

Free rides will remain in effect for same-day return trips.
