Spokane community organizations celebrate and donate to students

A local law firm and a community-building organization are distributing shoes, backpacks and school supplies to local school children.

SPOKANE, Wash. — A community celebration to build confidence in school-age children and supply them with shoes, backpacks and school supplies will take place Saturday, August 10 in Spokane's East Central neighborhood.

The celebration will be held at Underhill Park from 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is open to children in grades K-12.

There is no payment necessary, but organizers ask that those planning to attend pre-register on their website.

A local law firm, The Way to Justice, and a community-building organization, the Spokane Eastside Reunion Association (SERA) are working together to bring the event to life.

Last year the community celebration gave supplies to over 1,200 students and organizers say they hope to double that number this year.

They currently have more than 4,000 pairs of shoes ready to distribute and a huge stock of backpacks.

The event is free for community members to attend and grab the supplies they need.

Alethea Dumas, the Way to Justice Director of Community Engagement says that the event aims to set up local school kids for success in the new school year.

“We want to make sure all the kids are set up for success for the school year and what better way to do that than making sure they have not just really nice shoes but backpacks and school supplies," said Dumas.

The celebration will also feature a bike raffle, free food and drinks, games and booths of other local community organizations.

Pre-registration can be completed on SERA's website or by calling (509) 822-7514.
