Spokane construction projects coming to a close as season ends

Several construction projects are entering their final stages as winter weather creeps in.

SPOKANE, Wash. — During the summer, the City of Spokane worked on more than 40 road projects, including street maintenance, pedestrian improvements and major projects such as the Cheney-Spokane road work.

But all those detours and rough roads will come to an end as the winter weather forces construction crews to finish or pause their work.

Within the city limits of Spokane, there are 2,200 lane miles that the city has to maintain.

“So that takes time and it has to be done over a period of time. There’s no way we can get it all done at one time and this year has been challenging," said Kirstin Davis, the public works communication manager. "We’ve had some very challenging detours and we understand that. Especially northeast Spokane where you had Bigelow Gulch with the county being done, the north Spokane Corridor being done with WSDOT, and we needed to do some work that tied into those projects as well.”

As the summer comes to a close and winter is just around the corner, city officials say the last major project for the construction season is the Washington-Stevens corridor project.

“But while we’re doing that, we wanted to make sure we’re looking at the full corridor so that we’re not interrupting that corridor again next year or the year after," said Davis. "So we anticipate that to be fully functional here in the next month at the end of construction season.”

The Washington-Stevens corridor, and several other construction projects, will come to a close by the end of October or the beginning of November.
